Joseph Thompson & Eliza Jane Alderson

Joseph Thompson Born 5th March 1905 at 37 Church Way in North Shields, Tynemouth U.D.

Son of Joseph Thompson (snr) adobe Club Row Annitsford, a Coal miner Northumberland,  and Mary Ann Thompson Formerly Kane/Cain. 

Joseph Jnr Looks to be an only child.​

 

In 1911 Joseph was residing at the Old Institute in Seghill as a border along with his Father a coal miner.

For reasons unknown his mother Mary is in Tynemouth workhouse as a patient, showing as single but the name Mary Thompson a Charwoman.

Joseph Jnr was moved to industrial school the from Buddle School in 1914

Joseph married Eliza Jane Alderson on 4th October 1930 in Tynemouth district. Joseph living at 39 Berwicke St, Willington Quay and Eliza living at 1 Archer Street, Wallsend.

They had 8 Children.

In 1939 they were living at 83 Gordon Square, Wallsend. ​Joseph was not showing in this, Possibly one of the Records shown as closed on 1939 census, or could have been in military service..

Joseph died on 30th June 1983 aged 78,  in Howdon, North Tyneside. He was cremated on 5th July 1983 at Preston & Tynemouth Crematorium and scattered in Section D preston cemetery. His address at the time was Blackhill Avenue, Wallsends.

Joseph Thompson & Mary Ann Cain

Joseph Thompson  Born  19th October 1876.
Son of John Thompson and Mary Ann Foster
He was baptised on 1 Nov 1876 at St Joseph, Gateshead.

Mary Ann Cain -Born on 16th November 1884 at Dog Leap Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne. Baptised on 26 Nov 1884 at St.Nicholas, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Daughter of William Cain and Mary Ann Pearson. 

Her birth record is recorded as Kane all other records are Cain.

She was one of six children.

In 1891 Joseph is with his parents and siblings at 27&29 Grange Road, Jarrow a shipyard labourer while Mary is living at No.40 Diane Street, Westgate with her Father a cartman and Mother a charwoman.

 

Joseph married Mary Ann Cain on 28th March 1908 at St Mary's catholic Church on West Clayton Street, Newcastle. 
Joseph was residing at 75 Blandford Street, Newcastle and Mary was at 83 Blandford Street, Newcastle.

 

By 1911 the last found record of Mary is registered at the Tynemouth Workhouse as a patient, She is down as single but under the name Thompson. Whilst her husband and son are registered as boarders at the old institute in Seghill.

From stories told, Mary's husband was not a nice man and liked a drink and to fight. this may be the reason they are not found together in any records.

 

In 1923 Joseph re-marries to Lilly Kennedy  - 27 Jan 1923 at St. Peter, Low Town, Tynemouth. On the marriage certificate he is down as a widower. ​Joseph and Lily go on to have another 2 children

Joseph's died on 9th May 1936 at Farnborough County Hospital from Carcinoma of Stomach.

His address at the time of death was 25 Derwent Road, Anerley, Penge. This was certified by his widow Lily Thompson of the same address.

Wondering why Joseph and Lily moved to Penge, looking at census records of 1939, Joseph's Sister Mary Ann Hansell lived less that half a mile away from Derwent road with her family at Warbeck Road, Penge. It is also said that Joseph and Lily moved away as their marriage was frowned upon by Lillys family.

Son of Joseph Thompson and Ann Forbes

He was baptised on 24 Oct 1848 in Newcastle.

in 1851 he was living in Byker Lane, Byker with his parents and siblings.

He married Mary Ann Foster on 25 June 1872 at Newcastle Catholic Chapel Pilgrim Street Newcastle. John resided at Greenwell Street, Newcastle working as a fish curer and Mary Ann resided at Ouseburn, Newcastle.

They had 9 children.

in 1901 John is living at  2 Old Office Row, Seghill, Cramlington, with 2 of his sons as Boarders he is now a widower working as a  Coal hewer below ground.

He was one of five children.

John was residing at Close, Newcastle working as a labourer and Ann was residing at Sandgate, Newcastle.

Ann died at the age of 37 from cancer of the uterus, exhaustion 1 year. at Rippendean Street, Byker. In attendance was her husband John Thompson.

In 1871 John is living at 9 Gardners Buildings, Byker with his children, a widower working as a labourer.

 

John had an accident at work which saw him laid up for a long time. I presume at the lead works where he was working. Details unfound. He later died of lead poisoning on 17th February 1880 at Conyers Road, Byker. In attendance was her daughter-in law Margaret Thompson (Carlisle) of 14 Thompson Street, Byker.
