George Robert Charlton & Frances Hilda Henderson

Charlton (Diston), George Robert - Born on 23 Jan 1924 37 at Crossgate workhouse, Durham.

Son of Norman Edward Charlton and Ellen Diston. 

 

Georges surname was registered as his mothers maiden name Diston at birth.

He was born with infant paralysis and no hip on one side. Geordie has to have a special boot and brace on his leg due to this.

George was one off sixteen children from his father, out of the sixteen children six died in infancy or at birth. 

George never married but he had 10 children with Frances Hilda Henderson.Five Sons and five daughters.He lived most of his life in Sandersons Gardens, then Stobhill in Morpeth.

Son of Matthew Charlton and Eleanor Little.

Norman Married Jane Ann Gowland on 15th July 1893 at Stanhope, Durham.

They had one daughter.

Matthew Charlton & Eleanor Little

Charlton, Matthew - Born in 1842 at West Moore House, Hutton Henry, Durham.

Son of Thomas Charlton and Jane Brown Green.

Matthew married Eleanor Little in 1872 at Easington, Durham, England
Matthew was a widower when he married Eleanor Little. Details of first wife yet to be found.

They had seven children.

Matthew died in 1915 in Lanchester, he is buried in Benfieldside, Durham

Charlton, Thomas - Born  24th February 1813 at Pelton, Durham.

He married Jane Brown Green in 1841 at St. Margaret's, Durham.

They had eight children.

Thomas died on 27th May 1855 after an accident on the 12th Apr 1853 whilst working as a coal hewer at the Howdon Pit, Witton Le Wear, Durham where he was hit by a fall of stone.

Durham County Inquests: An inquest was held at Butterknowle, on the 7th inst., before Wm. Trotter, Esq., on view of the body of Thomas Hopper. The deceased was a hewer at Norwood Colliery. On the 3rd instant he was at work, and while lying on his side curving a "judd," about two feet six inches of coal fell from the roof upon him. He was immediately taken up, and was found to have been severely crushed in the bowels. He died the same night. No blame is attached to the deputy or any one concerned in the colliery workings. Verdict, "Accidental death." — An inquest was held at Witton-le-Wear, on the 4th instant, before Mr. Thornton, deputy coroner, on view of the body of Thomas. Charlton. The deceased was a hewer at a small landsale colliery at Howdon. On the 12th April he was at his work, when a quantity of coal fell from the roof upon him. He was found lying on his back and covered with the coal, — and as soon as assistance could be got, was removed home. He was found to have suffered dislocation of the spine, and he died on the 27th May. It appeared that the deceased had been warned the night before of the coal likely to fall. Verdict, "Accidental death." The inquest had been adjourned from the 28th May.
